Installation, 2023
Presented during the Royal Academy of Arts' graduation show (The Hague). Glass prints in steel frames, combined with stained glass sculptures supported by metal structures. Frames by Hein ter Linden.
When I return to my parents' homeland, I carry within myself the violence Europe exerts on Argentina. When I am in the country that shaped me and saw me grow up, I am reminded of the violence that occurs over there. There is never a truthful representation - never one without cracks that distort the image.
This project explores cultural hybridity in relation to identity as a result of migratory processes, which are informed by historical colonial interactions - particularly in the context of Argentina and Spain, the former being where I was born and the latter where I was raised. Inspired by Homi Bhabha's "The Third Space of Enunciation," I aimed to create an installation that visualizes this concept, materialized through the use of different formats such as stained glass, prints on glass, and metal.
I found in the stained glass technique a perfect metaphor for hybridity, as you intentionally place together pieces that otherwise wouldn't be joined. For my photographs, I wanted to capture the tension and contradictions I feel within myself regarding belonging and identity, creating images that are both fragile and soothing, yet distressed and violent. I want my images to inhabit an abstract realm of fantasy, existing between reality and imagination.
Through this work, I sought to create a visible and tangible third space of enunciation that serves as a refuge from the binary understanding of homeland imposed on us. Later, I realized that third spaces exist without permission and without the need for theoretical understanding.
